Homeopathy is a system of medicine which involves treating the individual with the essence
of highly diluted substances. These are given mainly in tablet form, and with the specific aim
of triggering the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Following an in-depth discussion of the
patient's specific symptoms, a homeopath will precribe the most appropriate medicines.
Treating like with like
Homeopathy is based on the principle that you can treat ‘like, with like’. For example, a substance which causes adverse symptoms
when taken, can also be used (in very small amounts) to treat thoser symptoms. Just as drinking too much caffeine can cause
sleeplessness and agitation, so when caffeine-containing substances are made into a homeopathic medicine, that can be used to treat
these symptoms. This concept is sometimes used in conventional medicine, for example, the stimulant Ritalin (which produces
hyperactivity in adults) can be used to treat teenage patients with ADHD. Similarly, small doses of allergens (such as pollen or house
dust) are sometimes used to desensitise allergic patients.
